Emarketer had a September 2014 survey by Accenture asking businesses if they thought that big data would change the way they do business. The answer? An overwhelming percentage said “um yeah!” Is it happening yet? No way. Just 5% of the respondents said it IS changing the way they do business, however 89% of them said they thought it WILL happen.
We saw this report and the same day we were watching an episode of Bar Rescue. Cheezy? Maybe. However good ‘ole John Taffer does things (whether it’s reality or not) by the stats. This particular restaurant that needed saving had 3 motorcycles parked outside. He noted that 65% of women over 34 would not go in. Even worse 88% won’t go in if there are 6 parked! He cites that they feel unsafe if it seems like a “motorcycle” bar. Talk about running your business by the stats.
Then it got us to thinking. A friend of ours became the chef at a restaurant here in San Francisco, one of his main problems was the fact that on Sundays it became a psuedo “biker bar” with a ton of Harley’s parked outside. His problem was that he wanted to “upscale” the food and make it more family friendly since it was in a popular tourist area but the bikers wouldn’t pay and the families weren’t coming. His solution? He started to pump opera music out the front of the restaurant scaring off the bikers and bringing in more families. The success skyrocketed!
