How to Play Big Brother On Your Own Website or App

Remember having to read 1984 in high school? Maybe we’re dating ourselves but we did and at that age we thought what Mr. Orwell was writing about was completely NUTS. But alas, it’s here and alive (thanks to Mixpanel) and just a few decades late!

Today it’s easier than ever to really hone in on analytics for the all digital parts of your business. Things like what pages people are visiting your site, where they came from, what is the trail they go down and where they drop off is easier than ever to track. It’s pretty cool to be able to visualize all of this data and then act on it.

At Dasheroo we started to use MixPanel to track what people are doing in our business dashboard application, one of the many products on the market that will do this analysis for you.

  • We can see WHO is visiting what pages and where they go by building funnels.

At Dasheroo we look at how many people are opening the Insight Library window and then connecting their apps. Almost half of the people connect which is great BUT there’s an opportunity for us to increase it by a few user interface changes.

  • We can view how many times a button is clicked, a page is loaded or some action is taken.

This report shows us that in this time period a large amount of people who are opening the Insight Library are connecting, this is great!

  • We even use it to send email notifications in the event someone doesn’t take the desired action we’d like them to.

We can see what happens the day after we send emails through MixPanel, people start creating Insights.

  • We can see what the drop off is from one page to another.

Is it just for a business services company like ours? No way! If you’re selling products from a shopping cart you can see where an individual is going and you can make decisions on how and where to place certain links to direct them to where YOU want them to go.

You can also A/B test so if you are selling a product with a picture and you want to test an alternative picture you can see what works better!

We are not getting paid for this, we just think it’s pretty cool.

Kissmetrics will do the same thing if you want another product to check out.
