Are You Paying Attention On Conference Calls or Are You in the Bathroom?

Harvard Business Review published a great article about Intercall’s survey to 530 Americans asking them what they’re doing while on a conference call and there are a few illuminating charts that show exactly that!

Here are some of the highlights:Screen Shot 2014-08-23 at 9.56.24 AM

  • 64% of the people use mobile phones to take conference calls (of course)
  • 65% are doing other work (hey surely we can multitask while on a call right?)
  • 47% are in the bathroom (Oh, the visuals…)
  • 55% are eating
  • 25% are playing video games (wonder if there is an “eating” crossover?)
  • 9% are exercising (wonder if this 9% just finished eating?)

And as far as those who mute themselves here’s why:Screen Shot 2014-08-23 at 9.56.35 AM

  • We get the background noise, it’s really annoying to hear construction as someone is running to catch the bus, the woman’s voice over the loudspeaker at an airport or screaming kids in the back. Totally makes sense.
  • 50% to avoid toilet flushing? Just ewe.
  • Hopefully there is no crossover with the 35% who are eating and the 50% who are flushing the toilet.
