1st Degree Connection
Users you’ve chosen to connect with. You most likely know them eg. have been to school/university/work with them.
2nd Degree Connection
A contact of a 1st degree connection i.e. “ a friend of a friend” You must request an introduction from 1st connection.
3rd Degree Connection
A contact of a 2nd degree connection. You must request an introduction but requires an intermediary step.
Activity Feed
Displays network activity such as joining/starting groups, comments, profile changes, and application downloads.
Activity Broadcasts
What is sent to the Activity Feed and visible to others. Can be edited.
Anonymous Viewers
Ever see that an anonymous member has viewed your profile? This means that the individual who viewed your profile has adjusted their privacy settings so that you cannot see his/her identifying information. This is often done by a recruiter or someone wanting to stay discreet.
Answers
Can be found in the ‘more’ tab, and is organized into New, Top and Categorized. Browse questions and subsequent asked by all LinkedIn users.
Basic Account
A free LinkedIn account is what the majority sign up for. Features are limited but usable, however you may wish to upgrade and pay.
Business Account
Can be paid annually or monthly. Features include 3 InMails a month, more profile search results, expanded profiles and storage space.
Business Plus Account
Can be paid annually or monthly. Features include 10 InMails a month, improved search results, expanded profiles, storage space and company intros.
Company Page
Businesses use this page to share information about their company and post industry updates. Company pages are great resources to research a business or review their products and services.
Connection
LinkedIn members who have accepted invitations to connect are connections. Connections can view profiles and networks of one another.
Executive Account
Can be paid annually or monthly. Features include 25 InMails a month, premium search results, maximum storage,3rd degree connection info, search filters.
Groups
These often serve as discussion forums on LinkedIn between group members.
InMail
Private messages that allow a member to directly contact any LinkedIn user, whilst protecting the recipient’s privacy (fee based).
Job Seekers Account
You can choose basic, standard or plus, for paid accounts that maximize your job seeking, and to make yourself visible to employers.
Inbox
Your inbox works like an email inbox. It holds personal messages that are sent to you by other LinkedIn members.
Intermediary
The process whereby a 1st degree connection must request an introduction from the secondary connection, in order to connect to the 3rd.
Introductions
If you’d like to connect with someone you aren’t connected with, you can send that person an Introduction.
Invitations
If you’d like to ask someone you know to join the LinkedIn network, you can send them an invitation.
Mention
Similar to other social networks, LinkedIn allows you to mention other members in your updates.
Network
Your network consists of your 1st Degree, 2nd Degree and 3rd Degree connections.
Open Link Network
Premium members can join, which then allows any LinkedIn member to send them an InMail free of charge, regardless of relationship.
Profile
Your profile image, credentials and other personal information are shared on your profile. Most LinkedIn users use this space to upload their resume or display job history and experience.
Recommendation
This LinkedIn feature allows users to share recommendations of one another, which are visible to anyone who views your profile. You can ask your connections for recommendations.
Skill Endorsements
The endorsement feature lets you recognize your connections for skills you’ve seen them demonstrate. Your connections can also endorse skills you’ve listed on your profile. Endorsements can strengthen a profile and help to keep connections strong within your network.
